It’s Time for Spring Cleaning

FREE Carwashes for Carpools.Spring is finally here! The sun is out and the flowers are in bloom. With spring comes the time to throw out the old and bring in the new. That means it is time for “Spring Cleaning,” and this year, Commuter Club is here to help.

Throughout May and June, we are helping you to clean up your commute by offering free carwashes for those who carpool.* Participating is easy, simply carpool during your lunch break on one of the dates below to the Bank of North Georgia on Akers Mill and get a free professional carwash.** All you need is two or more riders in your car at the time of the carwash. It’s that simple!

By participating in a carpool, you are helping to reduce pollutants that cause smog, while also easing congestion throughout the Cumberland Galleria and metro Atlanta area. When you carpool, you are also saving thousands of dollars a year. That means you can spend money on things that are important to you, such as summer vacations and getaways, instead of filling up your gas tank. As estimated by AAA, it costs $.57 for every mile that you drive. Even with a 15 mile round trip commute, that is almost $9 a day! Wouldn’t it be nice to share that cost with a friend, co-worker, or family member?

Help clean the air this spring along with Commuter Club and be rewarded. For sharing the ride, carpoolers are also eligible for cash, gift cards, and other great rewards. Go to www.commuterclub.com to “Log Your Carpool,” or to find a carpool partner!

Carpool dates are as follows from 11am-1pm in the Bank of North Georgia parking lot on Akers Mill Road:

  • May 16th
  • May 30th
  • June 13th
  • June 27th

*Please note carwashes are given on a first come, first serve basis
**Rain dates to be determined on an as needed basis

Rottenwood Creek Bridge
Pictured is the 180-foot bridge to cross Rottenwood Creek.

Get ready for the opening of the Bob Callan trail! In honor of the opening, a complementary lunch will be available and Atlanta Cycling will give away a bike to a lucky rider. The Cumberland Galleria is home to 1,200 acres of woodlands. This multi-use 2.1 mile trail will begin on Interstate North Parkway and connect with the Chattahoochee National Recreation Center on Highway 41. Take advantage of the park with a lunch at the picnic tables, or use the peaceful environment to take a walk, go for a jog or a bike ride. Look for information on the grand opening event at www.commuterclub.com to celebrate the trail opening!

Love your Ride to Work? These Vanpoolers Do!

Vanpool
Pictured here is Commuter Club’s demo van. If you are thinking about starting a vanpool and would like to set up a free two day trial with this van, call us at (770) 859-2331.

Commuting together from Conyers to Wildwood since January 2005, vanpoolers on VP 23209 have become quite close. Earlene Taylor with Coca-Cola Enterprises says their vanpool is special because “we truly have fun while commuting on the van. We’re like a family, we have someone to talk to on the ride home, and we even bring breakfast!”

Earlene gives Commuter Club a peek at the vanpool members who make her commute unique. Debby, the van’s record keeper and resident poet jots down humorous moments and which vanpooler arrives the earliest and the latest. She is also responsible for tracking commute times. You can frequently find Amanda and Earlene snoozing in the back of the van on the way into work, and vanpoolers debate everything from national and philosophical issues to American Idol.

Another noteworthy item that makes this Wildwood van unique: vanpooler Sonja is expecting soon! Members on the van encourage Sonja to pay her low flat rate twice, but she knows better. When names are suggested for her bundle of joy, the van’s new primary driver Randy is known to offer suggestions. And if you know Randy, each idea is a spin-off of his name!

We’d love to hear why your vanpool is special. To share, e-mail Ginny Rainey at grainey@commuterclub.com.

The Metro Atlanta Walk There! Challenge is complete. Congratulations to Peggy Powers of Freeman Mathis and Gary, who logged an impressive 745,525 steps throughout the event, which is approximately 372 miles total — about 12 miles a day! As the winner of the Walk There! Challenge, Peggy will certainly enjoy her weekend away at Callaway Gardens.

Walk There! Challenge participants didn’t take their mission lightly. Commuter Club veteran Mary Preister traveled to Las Vegas for a girl’s weekend with her daughters – and her pedometer in tow. “I logged a lot of steps,” Mary said. “At Red Rocks Park where we went hiking, in the Bellagio Hotel Conservatory with a Chihuly glass display, and including the time we spent dancing at an outdoor club!”

Pamela Shukis with Superior Essex used the Walk There! Challenge to jump start her exercise program. “I don’t know if I walked the most steps, but I certainly did lose a lot of weight – 16 pounds to be exact,” Pamela said. “Thanks to Commuter Club for getting me started on the road to a much healthier lifestyle.” When the Walk There! Challenge began, Pamela did some Internet research on the 10,000 steps program. Now that she has reached her initial goal, she intends to add weights and muscle toning to her regimen.

Congratulations to Nancy Bonomo, Clifton Brown, Lonna Copeland, Zidun He, Dorothy Henriksen, MJ Herndon, Nell Merkle, and Lorraine Munden! These Walk There! Challenge participants were lucky winners in Commuter Club’s weekly drawings for iPod Shuffles.

Thanks to all who participated in the Walk There! Challenge this year. Check back next spring for information on next year’s Walk There! Challenge.
