Nominate Your Flexible Workplace Program for the National Sloan Award for Business Excellence

When Work WorksCommuter Club and CobbRides recently established a new partnership with WellStar Health System to help promote the When Work Works Workplace Flexibility Initiative. When Work Works is a project of Families and Work Institute (FWI) sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in partnership with the Institute for a Competitive Workforce, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Twiga Foundation.

As one of only 30 select communities chosen to participate in this national, community-based initiative, Atlanta will enjoy the opportunity to learn, grow and be recognized for innovative business practices in workplace flexibility.

Applications are now open for the 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. This prestigious award recognizes employers in select communities nationwide that are successfully using flexibility to meet both business and employee goals. Review the qualifications and simple application and nominate your company today. The deadline for nominations is Monday, April 14.

Last summer, the Georgia Legislature formed the Joint Study Committee on Transportation Funding to study transportation issues throughout the state. The purpose of the committee was to study various transportation issues and determine alternate and special funding sources for transportation projects.

The committee released official recommendations on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Highlights include:

  • Allow Georgians to vote on a 1-cent sales tax on all goods and services for transportation funding.
  • Allow counties to join together as a region to pass a 1-cent sales tax for transportation funding in their area.
  • Create a State Infrastructure Bank for loans and credit to local governments for transportation facilities.
  • Have a single contractor be responsible for design and build-out of projects to streamline cost and time (called the design-build approach).
  • Create a statewide transportation plan to be edited and approved every five years. Plan to include mass transit programs.
  • Consider converting HOV lanes to high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes.
